How to Avoid Foreign Objects in a Turbocharger

19 May 2022
Turbochargers can spin up to tens of thousands of revolutions, and at high speeds, foreign objects can cause them to fail catastrophically.
What happens when a foreign body enters the supercharger? What if we should avoid foreign objects from entering?

What is foreign object damage?
A foreign object is an item that does not belong and does not meet the item specification. In a turbocharger, the entry of foreign objects can cause irreversible damage. It usually enters through the intake or exhaust and affects the performance of the turbocharger.

Foreign body source
Foreign object damage can occur in a number of ways. It can come from small particles entering through damaged or cracked hoses, damaged or faulty filters, loose debris from previous turbocharger failures, and damaged engine parts.
Also, it may come from other external sources. Examples include loose bolts, nuts, washers, rags, or other items that entered the intake duct during maintenance. Finally, loose particles can come from exhaust gas or even ice in low temperature conditions.

Some common signs include noise from the turbocharger during operation, chipping of compressor or turbine blades, loss of performance, and pitting around the compressor inlet and on the compressor blades. So, when your turbo makes strange noises, be sure to check and troubleshoot the cause of the problem.

Recommended Solutions
First, it's important to make sure the entire air system is flawless and free of debris.
Any cracks or crevices in the plumbing system can quickly enter damaging debris, so thoroughly inspect hoses and connectors for wear.
Second, you need to use new gaskets to prevent the risk of cracking and keep the turbocharger perfectly sealed.
Third, you should flush, change, and inspect engine oil, supplies, and pipes. Take a systematic approach after turbine failure. When in doubt, check the system again.

Finally, at Refone Turbo, we supply your vehicle with high quality turbos and parts that will protect your turbo well.
